Pradaxa is a medication manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH & Co. prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke in cases of atrial fibrillation (or AFib) not caused by a heart valve problem. Although Pradaxa can save lives when used properly, it has also been associated with life-threatening gastrointestinal conditions in more than 30 percent of patients.
Those involved in Pradaxa cases are filing suit to receive compensation for hospital/medical expenses, lost wages, and more. Contact us today for a free case evaluation.
Pradaxa poses increased risks
Pradaxa, a blood-thinning drug approved by the FDA in 2010 that prevents strokes in patients undergoing arterial fibrillation, is undergoing scrutiny by researchers and the FDA after reports that the drug increases the chances of serious health issues, like bleeding, heart attack and heart disease.
In a safety bulletin issued in December 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it is evaluating claims that the drug is connected to “serious bleeding events” in patients.
Pradaxa Side Effects
The most common dangerous side effects of Pradaxa include:
- Severe heartburn and abdominal pain
- Gatroesophageal reflux disease
- Ulcers in the digestive tract
- Major and life-threatening bleeding in the gastrointestinal system
- Bleeding of the brain
In addition to the serious bleeding concern, Cleveland Clinic researchers are evaluating data that show Pradaxa may increase the risk of heart attack or acute coronary syndrome (serious heart disease). The data are from seven clinical trials involving over 30,500 patients that compared Pradaxa with control drugs like warfarin or placebos. The researchers found that Pradaxa causes a 33 percent higher chance of heart attack or heart disease than warfarin.
