Faulty DePuy hip implants merit compensations

Defective medical device attorneys helping victims in their DePuy hip lawsuits

Thousands of DePuy Orthopedics hip replacement systems have been recalled because of high failure rates. Many people with hip implants had to endure pain and the adversities of new surgeries to replace the devices, and then rehab.

Serious illness and permanent disability are other consequences of the failed joint if not replaced in time.

Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson is the parent company of DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. Both companies had to pay $2.5 billion for more than 7,000 lawsuits over its ASR metal-on-metal hip devices.

The artificial medical device ASR XL Acetabular Hip System, manufactured by DePuy, had a failure rate of 12 percent, but was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) without a clinical trial.

Other models also recalled are the ASR 300 Acetabular Cup System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The Pinnacle devices were discontinued in 2013 after the FDA strengthened its artificial hip regulations.

In December 2016, a federal jury in Dallas ordered Johnson & Johnson and DePuy Orthopaedics to pay $1 billion to plaintiffs with Pinnacle hip implants that had defective designs and the companies failed to warn the public about the risks.

For a total hip replacement surgery, worn and damaged portions of the bone and cartilage are removed and replaced with an artificial hip joint. There are different combinations of medical devices for this kind of surgeries.

If you or your love one suffered lasting harm from hip replacement or are waiting to have your DePuy hip replaced, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and for economic losses and personal suffering.

Risks go beyond the hip

Patients who received mental-on-metal (MoM) hip implants should also watch for changes in their general health, including new or worsening symptoms apart from their hip, according to a U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) new stand on hip replacements.Patients who received mental-on-metal (MoM) hip implants should also watch for changes in their general health, including new or worsening symptoms apart from their hip, according to a U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) new stand on hip replacements.

Hip replacement patients should look for certain symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body (systemic reactions), like these:

  • General hypersensitivity reaction (skin rash)
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Neurological changes including sensory changes (auditory, or visual impairments)
  • Psychological status change (including depression or cognitive impairment)
  • Renal function impairment
  • Thyroid dysfunction (including neck discomfort, fatigue, weight gain or feeling cold

DePuy replacement hip system injury claims

Greg Jones Law provides representation for claims against DePuy Orthopedics. The company has tried to settle with recipients of its defective hip systems, but claims are likely worth far more than what the manufacturer offers.

In August 2010, when DePuy recalled two replacement hip systems (ASR XL Acetabular System, used for total hip replacements, and ASR Hip Resurfacing System), the devices were linked to these problems:

  • • Catastrophic failure of the cup (socket) and joint.
  • Fracturing of the adjacent bone.
  • Blood poisoning from metal fragments.
  • Pseudo tumors
  • Sharp and chronic pain.
  • Reduced mobility or pronounced limp.

Irreversible damage was found in some patients and their hips could not be repaired. Many patients suffered complications of the original surgery and the subsequent one to replace the failed DePuy device. The hip had to be repaired with another brand.
Even though artificial hips are designed to last 15 years or more, many patients needed replacement within a year or less. The failure was traced to design defects.
