Side effects of Lipitor
Manufactured by Pfizer, one of world’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers, Lipitor has been found to cause side effects. Consumers can experience minor side effects including insomnia, dizziness diarrhea or constipation. More major side effects from using the drug include kidney failure, heart attack and nerve damage.
However, a new study has linked the drug to another serious side effect: type 2 diabetes.
From 1993-2005, researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School examined roughly 154,000 women age 63 and older and found that out of this total number, over 10,000 developed type 2 diabetes.
The researchers looked into the cases to determine the cause of the women who specifically developed diabetes. After examining factors such as weight and lifestyle, and medication each were taking, they found that postmenopausal women specifically taking Lipitor were in the category.
In fact, researchers determined that these women had as high as a 46 percent more likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes than other women in the study.
Hazards of type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a serious life-threatening health condition. Type 2 diabetes happens either when a person’s body isn’t producing enough insulin to take the glucose from the blood to a person’s cells or a person’s body becomes resistant to the insulin. (Insulin is responsible for taking the sugar, or glucose, form the blood to the cells of the body.)
When there’s too much glucose in the blood, serious health problems can occur. Nerve, kidney and damage to vision are a few health hazards caused by type 2 diabetes.
Because of the alarming results of the study, safety labels were changed and public awareness was provided by the FDA regarding the serious side effects, including the increase in risk of developing diabetes, of using Lipitor.
Additional research on the link to type 2 diabetes, specifically in postmenopausal women, is expected to continue. As more and more baby boomers age, there will likely be an increase in the number of users of the drug or similar medications classified as statins.
