Defective DePuy Hip Replacements

Complications or failure of DePuy artificial hip systems

DePuy Orthopedics recalled thousands of hip replacement systems after the implants turned out to have a high failure rate. Many people have endured the pain and hardships of another round of surgery and rehab to remove and replace the device. Others have suffered serious illness and permanent disability when the joint failed before it could be replaced.

Did you or your loved one suffer lasting harm from hip replacement? Are you still waiting to have your DePuy hip replaced? You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and for economic losses and personal suffering. You need an attorney who can hold the manufacturer accountable for full damages.

In August 2010, DePuy recalled two replacement hip systems, the ASR XL Acetabular System, which is used for total hip replacements, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The recall was linked to a host of problems:

  • Catastrophic failure of the cup (socket) and joint
  • Fracturing of the adjacent bone
  • Blood poisoning from metal fragments
  • Pseudotumors
  • Sharp and chronic pain
  • Reduced mobility or pronounced limp

Some patients suffered irreversible damage that could not be repaired. Many patients have suffered complications of the original surgery or the subsequent surgery to replace the failed DePuy hip with another brand.

Artificial hips are designed to last 15 years or more, but many patients who received DePuy implants needed replacement within a year or less. The failure rate, as high as 1 in 8, has been traced to a number of design defects. DePuy hoped to settle these cases quickly to avoid bigger payouts in lawsuits and class actions.
