SSRI Birth Defects Attorney

Was your baby harmed by antidepressants during pregnancy?

Several credible medical studies have established a link between birth defects and the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) by women who were pregnant. Despite assurances that these antidepressants were safe, prescription SSRIs are now believed to greatly increase the risk of heart defects and other serious complications in those newborns.

The FDA has issued two health advisories relating to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, a class of drugs which includes such household names as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, Cymbalta and Effexor. As the risks have been revealed, a number of lawsuits have been filed on behalf of those infants and their parents.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, were heralded as a new generation of antidepressants with fewer side effects. However, a number of studies have found links to serious birth defects, including:

  • Heart defects
  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)
  • Other lung defects
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Cleft lip or cleft palate
  • Club foot and other limb defects
  • Neurological defects

One of the earliest studies found a significantly higher rate of heart defects in babies whose mothers used SSRIs during the first trimester of pregnancy. A study published in 2006 revealed that PPHN, a life-threatening lung condition, was six times higher in women who used SSRIs in the third trimester. Other birth defects have been linked to use of antidepressants as much as 12 months before getting pregnant.
