Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, were heralded as a new generation of antidepressants with fewer side effects. However, a number of studies have found links to serious birth defects, including:

- Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)
- Other lung defects
