Fosamax is a biphosphonate drug commonly prescribed for people with osteoporosis. It was introduced to the public in 2000 as a cure for stopping and even reversing bone loss in postmenopausal women. But in 2010, researchers discovered a link between Fosamax and no-trauma femur fractures. In October 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required the manufacturer, Merck, to warn physicians and users of this previously undisclosed side effect. Merck did alter its warning labels but still sells alendronate as Fosamax and Fosamax D, meaning that millions of users are potentially at risk of a broken femur.
